Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling:

  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons water (or apple cider for more flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

For the Crumble Topping:

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line 6-8 small ramekins or dessert cups.
  • Prepare Apple Filling: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, lemon juice, and water (or apple cider). Stir and cook for 8-10 minutes until apples are softened.
    • Thicken (optional): If you'd like a thicker filling, dissolve cornstarch in 1 tablespoon of water and stir into the apple mixture. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until thickened.
  • Make Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, mix flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in melted butter until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Assemble: Divide the apple filling evenly among the ramekins or dessert cups. Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over the apples.
  • Bake: Place the dessert cups in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown.
  • Serve: Let the dessert cups cool slightly before serving. Top with caramel sauce or a scoop of ice cream, if desired.

Notes

  • Substitute apple cider for water to enhance the apple flavor.
  • Adjust the spice levels to your preference.
  • For extra crunch, add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping.
