Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 green onion, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Marinate the Beef:
In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce, cornstarch, and ground black pepper. Mix well and set aside to marinate for 10 minutes.
  • Prepare the Stir-Fry Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, and water. Set aside.
  • Stir-Fry the Beef:
Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the beef in batches (to avoid overcrowding) and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  • Cook the Onions:
In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tbsp of oil. Stir-fry the onions for 3-4 minutes until they soften and begin to caramelize. Add the minced garlic and stir for another minute until fragrant.
  • Combine and Finish:
Return the beef to the skillet, pour in the stir-fry sauce, and stir everything together for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the beef and onions. Drizzle with sesame oil (if using) and garnish with sliced green onions.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra tenderness, you can add 1 tsp of baking soda to the marinade before stir-frying the beef.
  • Add bell peppers or snow peas for extra color and flavor.
  • Substitute soy sauce with tamari for a gluten-free option.
