This classic patty melt recipe combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, gooey cheese, and perfectly toasted rye bread for an indulgent and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  •  lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Form the ground beef into 4 equal patties and season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook the patties in a skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  • In the same skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter and sauté onions until golden and caramelized, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
  • Layer a slice of cheddar, a beef patty, caramelized onions, a slice of Swiss cheese, and top with another slice of bread, buttered side out.
  • Grill each sandwich in the skillet over medium heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the onions while caramelizing.
  • Use a sandwich press or a heavy pan to press down the sandwiches for even grilling.
