Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes
  • Green onions and sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together egg, cornstarch, flour, and water to form a batter. Coat chicken pieces evenly.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry chicken until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  • In a small saucepan, whisk soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Simmer until thickened.
  • Toss fried chicken in the sauce until fully coated.
  • Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot with rice.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, double-fry the chicken.
  • Adjust the chili flakes to control the spice level.
  • Works well with chicken breast or tofu as a substitute.
