Ingredients

Scale

For the Shortbread Crust:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

For the Apple Filling:

  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled and diced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves

For the Crumb Topping:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

For the Salted Caramel Sauce:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • ½ tsp sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. Make the shortbread crust: Mix melted butter, sugar, vanilla, and salt in a bowl. Stir in flour until combined. Press dough evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until lightly golden.
  3. Prepare the apple filling: Toss diced apples with flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the baked crust.
  4. Make the crumb topping: Combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle the topping over the apple filling.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apples are tender.
  6. Make the salted caramel sauce: Heat sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Stop stirring and let it boil until amber in color. Remove from heat and stir in butter, cream, and sea salt.
  7. Drizzle the warm caramel sauce over the cooled bars and serve.

Notes

  • For extra caramel flavor, drizzle more salted caramel on individual servings.
  • Bars can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
