Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups pasta (penne, rotini, or fusilli)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Cook the pasta according to package instructions; drain and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and stir in the flour to make a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then slowly whisk in beef broth and cream. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in sour cream and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Combine the cooked pasta and meatballs in a baking dish. Pour the sauce over the mixture, stirring to coat everything evenly.
  • Top with shredded cheese and bake for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, use a combination of beef and pork in the meatballs. You can also add sautéed mushrooms or spinach to the sauce for a heartier dish. This recipe can be made ahead—just assemble and refrigerate until ready to bake.
